4th of July Firecracker Two-Mile Run

It’s time once again to prepare for the annual Fourth of July Firecracker Race.

The event is held each year as part of the Ripley Independence Day festivities in the downtown area, said Gary Lee Tolley, co-director of Main Street Ripley, the group that sponsors the race.

The 11:30 a.m. race will begin just prior to the grand parade that travels through downtown Ripley. More than 100 runners participated in the two-mile race last year.

Tolley said the first place finishers in the men’s and women’s divisions will receive $100. In addition, trophies will be presented to the top three racers in the following age divisions: 14 and younger, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and over 60. There also are awards for the top wheelchair and hand-pedaled bike racers.

There is an entry fee for the race, and the first 150 participants to register will receive a T-shirt. Registrations will be accepted the day of the race beginning at 10 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church located on the corner of North and Court Streets.
